Whale-watching companies are predicting a successful season this year in the Strait of Georgia after numerous orca sightings in recent weeks.

"We're seeing transient killer whales in larger numbers than in previous years, and all the whales that we see seem to have babies with them," Cathy Morimoto, owner of Steveston Seabreeze Adventures, said in a release issued by Tourism Richmond.

Vancouver Whale Watch has also reported plentiful orca sightings.

Both companies are based in the historic fishing village of Steveston in southwest Richmond, about a half hour from downtown Vancouver.

Tours through the Strait of Georgia and the Gulf and San Juan islands depart daily and last three to five hours. Most cost $120 for adults. Sea lion tours are shorter and cost $30-$35.

The whale-watching season kicked off April 1 and runs until October.
