Why you should visit Nova Scotia, Washington, Venice and Melbourne

Adventure Canada, a small ship expedition company best known for its Eastern Arctic cruises, sets sail for Sable Island, a rarely visited and remote 41 kilometre sandbar that's home to unique wildlife, ship wrecks and a research and rescue station. The weeklong journey takes place June 2014 devotes four days to exploring the landscape and the resident population of feral ponies, harbour and grey seals and colonies of birds. There are few human inhabitants on the island, so don't expect to see

civilization until the final two days on Saint Pierre.

A New Age of Exploration honours the 125-year history of the National Geographic Society through photography, film and a behind-the-scenes look at some iconic expeditions. The interactive exhibit reveals to Mount Everest, the North and South poles, and the Amazonian rain forest from the perspective of

scientists and cartographers. Rare archive photographs and articles cover historic moments (Hiram Bingham's 1912 excavation of Machu Picchu, Jacques Cousteau's first underwater expeditions) and recent discoveries like director James Cameron's dive to the Mariana Trench. On display at National Geographic Museum until June 8, 2014.


Brothers Nicola and Alessio Campa, owners of super stylish Ca' Maria Adele, have expanded their boutique hotel empire with the opening of Palazzeto 13. Next door to its sister hotel, the stylish annex has two rooms, both decked in rich hues of purples and gold, a fireplace, and a plush king size bed with Italian linens. Breakfast is delivered in a picnic basket (there's no restaurant) and the shaded roof terrace is a good spot to uncork some prosecco and take in views of the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.


Housed in a 19th-century building that was the city's oldest public house, Captain Melville is a hip watering hole that serves old-fashioned cocktails and a modern Australian comfort food. The interior is more sophisticated than the average pub, and so is the menu. With names like Beechworth Gunpowder and Hailstorm Julep, you'll have to study the drink selection carefully, or stick to a glass of local chardonnay to complement such signature dishes as salt and sichuan pepper squid on yuzu mayo, and beef cheek and white rabbit dark ale pie.
