The agency that runs the parks is experimenting with wireless Internet service at Pinery Provincial Park on Lake Huron, and will consider adding the service in other parks if campers agree.

John Salo, the southwest zone manager for Ontario Parks, says the service was set up on a trial basis after some campers said they needed to stay connected even while getting away from it all.

Mr. Salo says the wireless zone is limited to a terrace outside the store in the middle of the park and is not extended to campsites.

The wireless program at Pinery will be reassessed at the end of this summer and if the majority of comments are positive, wireless could be established in some other provincial parks.

However, Mr. Salo says not all parks have a setup similar to Pinery near Grand Bend, with a store area away from campsites, so wireless won't be expanded to all provincial parks in Ontario.
