Travel deals to celebrate Day of the Dead in Mexico

Celebrate Day of the Dead in Playa del Carmen with a reduced resort rate.


Day-of-the-dead treats for travellers

The buy: The Day of the Dead might seem an odd time of year to run a travel promotion, but in Mexico it's a celebration with homes decorated, candles lit and favourite foods prepared.

The savings: Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen, located in the Riviera Maya, is offering 40 per cent off regular rates of $150 a night for a one-bedroom studio and 50 per cent off any seven-night reservation.

The catch: The discounts are valid Oct. 20 to Nov. 25.

Why it's worth it: In addition to colourful celebrations in Playa del Carmen, Xcaret (, the eco-cultural family park four miles south of the town, organizes a Life and Death festival every year with traditional food, art, music, contests and shows.

European tour knocks off $250

The buy: Trafalgar Tours has cut the price for a 17-day tour of Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

The savings: The regular price has been reduced from $2,399 to $2,149 per person. The catch: The discount applies to the Nov. 5 departure only, airfare is not included and you must book by Oct. 6.

Why it's worth it: Sightseeing highlights range from the Jewish synagogue and El Greco masterpiece in Toledo, Spain, to a walking tour of the Medina in Fez, Morocco, and from the Rock of Gibraltar (above) to the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca, Spain. Program includes daily breakfast and nine dinners.

Winter sun seekers save $200 a couple

The buy: Sunwing Vacations is offering an instant cash-back promotion on winter holidays.

The savings: $100 per person.

The catch: The offer applies to vacation packages of seven and 14 nights booked by Oct. 6 for departures from all gateways across Canada from Nov. 1 to March 31. Florida and Las Vegas vacations are excluded.

Why it's worth it: All-inclusive packages are even cheaper this winter than last, as tour operators keep adding more departure dates and times. With no need to spend a cent at your destination, these holidays are an incredible bargain. With this promotion, a one-week holiday from Toronto to Palladium Vallarta Resort and Spa near Puerto Vallarta is $695 for Jan. 10, 17 and 24 departures (plus $287 in taxes), while one week at the Henry Morgan Hotel and Beach Resort in Roatan (Honduras), famed for its diving, is $895 plus $240 for Jan. 3 and 10 departures from Toronto.

Dusseldorf celebrates with city savings

The buy: Dusseldorf is Germany's fashion capital and boasts striking modern architecture. Until January, Quadriennale celebrations feature major contemporary art exhibits along with travel specials for hotels and rail travel.

The savings: Four- and five-star hotel packages start at $111 (79 euros) per person. For travel to and beyond Dusseldorf, German Rail offers a special for Quadriennale 2010 ticket holders. For $54, round-trip tickets on high-speed ICE trains are available for travel from any train station within a 300-kilometre radius.

The catch: The hotel deals are available through Jan. 31 and the rail deal through Jan. 16.

Why it's worth it: Packages include one hotel night (double occupancy), a two-day Quadriennale ticket (good for all venues), one Dusseldorf welcome card (includes free public transportation for two days) and a city information package.
