Ridgeview Grosvenor 2006

News roundup for the hungry traveller.

THE DRINK: Sparkling Sussex

For the first time ever, a wine from outside the Champagne region has won the title of the best sparkling wine in the world at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards. Even more remarkable: The winning wine comes from Sussex, England. Ridgeview Wine Estate's Grosvenor Blanc de Blancs 2006 beat out more than 700 sparkling wines. With more than 60 wineries in the Sussex and South Downs area of England, this may just be the next great wine region.

THE VENUE: A movable feast

Appliance manufacturer Electrolux has created a portable pop-up restaurant. "The Cube" is a laser-cut aluminum-skinned wedge of a building that will serve lunch and dinner to 18 guests at a time. First stop for the Cube is the top of the arc at Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels where chefs Sang-Hoon Degeimbre and Bart de Pooter are serving lunch and dinner until July 3.

THE FLAVOUR: Smoking or non?

Smoking is back in a big way in restaurants across America. Chefs are going well beyond salmon and baby back ribs and throwing everything but the kitchen sink into their smokers. New York's Compose restaurant serves smoked grapes with its "warm mozzarella spheres," while Seattle's Spur gastropub makes its panna cotta with smoked yogurt and Commonwealth in San Francisco smokes its bread.
