ARIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 19

Although January's mid-heaven solar eclipse will move you closer to a long-term goal, this is not the moment to relax or leave things to chance, especially after unpredictable Uranus begins a seven-year transit of your sign in mid-March. Most importantly, you must keep a sense of perspective, and be prepared to change course in midstream if necessary. With success planet Jupiter moving in your favour, you can spend the first half of the year making a difference, and the second half making money. As Marcel Proust said, "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."

TAURUS: APRIL 20 - MAY 20

Although disciplinarian Saturn in the work angle of your chart will keep your nose to the grindstone this year, there are also signs of a change of tempo when it comes to more personal areas of your life. The enlightening planets Jupiter and Uranus together in the most reflective sector of your chart for much of the year will give you the chance to think about who you are rather than what you have achieved. Listen to your inner voice and act on what it tells you - even if it means having to rearrange certain plans to fit in with new priorities.

GEMINI: MAY 21 - JUNE 20

With ambitious Jupiter, rebellious Uranus and perceptive Neptune taking turns to highlight your career and status, 2011 should see the conclusion of a business or professional saga that began last year. How it ends depends largely on how realistic your goals have been, as well as your dealings with others involved: If it all works out as it should, your future prospects will be greatly improved. With so much of the year's celestial activity focusing on broadening your mind and your horizons, it is worth remembering that it is better to know nothing than to learn nothing.

CANCER: JUNE 21 - JULY 22

You must start as you intend to continue this year - and that means being proactive rather than reactive, as appears to have been the case recently. With the first eclipse of 2011 falling in your opposite sign, you will achieve more by working with other people than going it alone. The solar eclipse in your birth sign on July 1 will mark a turning point, reminding you that success and commitment go hand-in-hand. Even so, if you focus too hard on the glittering prizes, you will simply end up dazzled. As someone once said, "the important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle."

LEO: JULY 23 - AUG. 22

It's one thing to focus on a goal with single-minded determination; it's quite another to take your enthusiasm to extremes and ruthlessly strive for your objective to the detriment of all - and everyone - else. That, in a nutshell, is your message for 2011, when obsessive and even aggressive Jupiter-Pluto alliances in February, July and October will bring out the driven side of your nature. It doesn't mean you should ignore your goals or alter course, but you must proceed with the greatest caution and take exceptional care not to trample on those who may lack your talents but still deserve your respect.

VIRGO: AUG. 23 - SEPT. 22

Major planetary activity across the financial and business axis of your solar chart gives you the chance to do something serious about your cash-flow situation in 2011. A tug-of-war between extravagant Jupiter and parsimonious Saturn at the end of March will create a climate for change, but it's up to you to work your way through whatever challenges lie ahead - and there will be a few. They are, however, there for a reason - if only to test your resourcefulness. And never forget that, when it comes to the crunch, life is about painting a picture, not doing math.

LIBRA: SEPT. 23 - OCT. 22

Whatever your state of mind as you enter 2011, you need to focus on your objectives, both short- and long-term, and prepare to work hard to achieve them. With Saturn, planet of diligence and discipline, in your sign, strongly influencing your life throughout the year - but especially in March/April - there will be no shirking responsibilities. Although love and laughter also feature strongly - particularly in February and October - the overall celestial pattern for 2011 is one that favours achievement over enjoyment. Just remember that, although the road uphill may seem tougher than the road downhill, they are, in fact, the same road.

SCORPIO: OCT. 23 - NOV. 21

Your life right now appears to be a tug-of-war between what you stand to gain and what you stand to lose, reaching a climax around the time of March's Jupiter-Saturn opposition. The input of your ruler Pluto, planet of power, in early July could prove to be the deciding factor, but much also depends on the motives of others involved. Whatever happens, 2011 is unlikely to be an easy year, but the joint influence of expansive Jupiter and enlightening Uranus suggests that it will be illuminating. And what you learn from your mistakes will ensure a smoother path into the future.

SAGITTARIUS: NOV. 22 - DEC. 21

This has the potential to be a marvellous year for Sagittarians, and could bring to fruition several of your longest-held dreams and desires. With your ruler Jupiter, planet of good fortune, at its most dynamic, romantic and creative in the first half of 2011, you are entering a period of real growth and greater fulfilment. Uranus, planet of changes, in Aries from March, marks a change of priorities, while events surrounding June's lunar eclipse in your sign will set you on a quest for something very different. Bear in mind that genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains.

CAPRICORN: DEC. 22 - JAN. 19

You must be careful not to over-react to pressure from the powers-that-be this year, resulting in you supporting the wrong causes for the wrong reasons and in the wrong way - especially around the time that your restrictive ruler Saturn is opposed by expansive Jupiter in late March. With self-deceptive Neptune influencing your ideas from April to August, your anxieties are likely to owe more to paranoia than common sense. July's solar eclipse will herald a new era in terms of at least one important relationship, but you will need to sort out a joint financial issue if things are to remain on an even keel.

AQUARIUS: JAN. 20 - FEB. 18

Because 2011 begins with a major conjunction between wealth planet Jupiter and changes planet Uranus, fundamental adjustments to the way you handle your finances are likely this year. Something that occurs around the time of March's full moon will give you a clearer insight into what the options are and who can help you to achieve them, but beware Neptune's misleading influence between April and August, when it comes to balancing the books. Serious improvements may have to wait until the sun joins forces with Jupiter in early September; just accept that there are times when the experts know more than you.

PISCES: FEB. 19 - MARCH 20

Some mountains can be moved and others very definitely cannot and your predicament this year is to try to distinguish between the two. Your ruler Neptune, planet of the imagination, in your sign from April to August after an absence of 164 years, will force you to differentiate between the plausible and mere wishful thinking. Hedge your bets in late March when a Jupiter-Saturn opposition sees you pulling in two directions. With your beliefs under pressure, consider the words of Mark Twain: "Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone, you may still exist, but you have ceased to live."
