How to capture movement with shutter speed
Globe and Mail photojournalist Tim McKenna gives some tips and tricks on changing exposure time to add movement to your photos
This soccer action photo was shot at 1/15th of a second. The face of the player in white is moving very little and appears relatively sharp. Everything else is moving and will blur across the focal plane at such a slow shutter speed.
This photo of nuts being heated was shot at a night market in Xi'an, China . Shot at 1/4 second shutter speed only the objects not moving appear sharp. The nuts are moving slowly in the bin and appear blurred.
This photo of traffic in Beiijng was shot at 1/15 of a second. The lens was panned - moving at the same speed as the child in yellow and the adult in red. Thus they appear sharp. All else will appear to blur.
