One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures.

Photo tip for Feb. 16: The slightly elevated position lets the photographer use the snow as a background creating this great image. The snow frames the three elements of the image the tree, shack and man with the sheep. Try getting up high to clean up the background giving more focus to your subjects.

Photo tip for Feb. 15: Using a slow shutter speed the cars head and tail lights leave trails as they move through the frame. Try using a very slow shutter speed on a street scene to show how things move through the frame.

Photo tip for Feb. 14: The boat going by in the background really helps to make this image. Without it the image would seem static and boring. Keep an eye out for things that may enter your frame when you are composing your image. They just might make it more interesting.

Photo tip for Feb. 13: The colour in this image steals the show. The man adds a point of reference to the image that people can relate to. With out him in the frame there would be no focal point for the reader and the image would be very abstract. Try waiting for people to walk into your frame when shooting patterns or graphic elements.

Photo tip for Feb. 10: Kevin van der Leek captured this scene on Sunday while taking a one-hour walk around Pitt-Addington Marsh in B.C. It was selected as the best submission on the theme of reflections. Why we chose it: The photographer chose wisely in shooting still water – the glass-like effect is free from texture or distortion, giving it a mirror effect. The framing also creates perfect symmetry between the top and bottom, emphasizing the peaks and valleys in the mountainscape.
