One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures.

Photo tip for March 1: From the straight down vantage point the photographer is able to capture a really nice pattern that you wouldn't see from ground level. The farmer adds a point of interest to the picture. Try looking for a place to get up high and shoot down on your subject to give your viewer an angle they may not have seen before.

Photo tip for Feb. 29: Using a slow shutter speed adds some motion blur to the image creating a feeling of movement for the dancers. Try using a slow shutter speed when shooting subjects that are moving. You can pan with them blurring the background or stay stationary and have the moving subject blur.

Photo tip for Feb. 28: By shooting from a low angle the photographer is able to use some shells to frame the subject. Try getting down low to give a different vantage point to the reader.

Photo tip for Feb. 27: There is some nice layering happening with the ground in the front and mountains in teh back. The mountains are slightly out of focus bringing the readers eye right to the subjects.

Photo tip for Feb. 24: Christian Richard of Lévis, Quebec, was on a photo walk last Sunday when he decided to take a shortcut through an underground passage. He spotted this walkway, framed perfectly by the architecture, and used a remote to create a self-portrait. It was selected as the best submission on the theme of framing. Why we chose it: The image is simple and well-executed, and the use of multiple frames is interesting with only the centre one being filled. The readers eye goes directly to the subject, which shows the technique worked well in this picture.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. On Friday, we'll publish in the newspaper our favourite reader photo on a weekly theme. This week's theme: Portraits
