One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures
A dog looks out of a window at the Alfama neighborhood in Lisbon WHY WE PICKED IT: The great use of sunlight draws your eye to the subject. With the rich detailing on the window and surrounding patterned wall, the image stands out even more.
Spanish frigate crew members salute during the decommissioning ceremony of the aircraft carrier Principe Asturias, in Rota, southern Spain. WHY WE PICKED IT: The crop here is what grabbed our attention. Capturing just the three soldiers at the bow of the ship. Setting the exposure for the ship and soldiers darkens the surrounding water and draws you eye to them.

The sun shines as water squirts from a fountain in central London February 5, 2013. WHY WE PICKED IT: Great use of the direct sunlight to create this abstract photograph of water spraying from a water fountain. A fast shutter speed freezes the water and forms some interesting shapes.
A woman holds an umbrella while climbing the stairs at Raschplatz square in Hanover. WHY WE PICKED IT: The horizontal lines of the stairs creates a terrific pattern and having the subject climbing stairs just adds a bit of action and colour to the frame.

Christian Richard of St-Nicolas (Levis) on the south shore of Quebec city shot this eerie photo of kids toys partially covered with snow. The composition is great as the photographer got down low to show the snow covering the summer toys.
