A B.C. woman is recovering from surgery after being accidentally shot in the back during a camping trip.

The 20-year-old woman from Salmon Arm is in stable condition in hospital.

RCMP say she knew the people involved in the incident at Mount Ida, in the Shuswap area, and they're investigating how the firearm discharged.

Sgt. Carlos Tettolowski says police responded to a call in the isolated area at about 9 p.m. Saturday.

He says the terrain could only be accessed by a four-by-four or ATV and that caused some delay in transporting the woman to where she could be transferred to an ambulance.

Tettolowski says she was camping with friends and family and that no alcohol was involved.
