An eight-year-old Oliver, B.C., boy fought as hard as he could, but severe burns suffered in a motorhome fire in late August proved too much.
Cody O'Conner died Friday at Canuck Place in Vancouver, after being removed from life support.
He was burned over 40 per cent of his body on Aug. 28, when a smoky blaze engulfed his family's older-model motorhome, parked at a campsite in Oliver.
The boy's family recently relocated to Oliver and was living at the campground while looking for a permanent home.
Oliver Fire Chief Dan Skaros pulled Cody from the flames. At the time it was reported the child's injuries were serious, but not life-threatening, but his conditioned worsened after he was transported to Vancouver, and he spent his final days at the children's hospice.
Karen Sinclair, vice-principal at Oliver Elementary School where Cody was supposed to start Grade Three and had attended the school for part of Grade Two, said staff is saddened by the tragic event and has made counselling available for students.
"He was a wonderful child … a very happy little boy who was always smiling," she said.
The cause of the fire was not suspicious.
The family is not insured and a registered organization known as Sharespring is assisting with funeral arrangements.
