Danny BhoyHandout

He learned the art of storytelling as a kid at the end of the bar in his uncle's hotel, grew up watching Billy Connolly, then tried his hand at stand-up in a 60-seat theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Now Scottish comedian Danny Bhoy is one of the most sought-after comedians on the planet, selling out houses around the globe – especially in Commonwealth countries such as Australia and Canada.

It's a different story in the southern U.S., says the 38-year-old, who grew up in the only mixed-race family in his tiny Scottish village outside Edinburgh. "There aren't many Scottish Indians," he jokes. "That's two very separate characters on The Simpsons to them."

Known for his comparatively clean style – he says "I like the fact that you can bring your gram to the show, and you can bring your 14-year-old" – Bhoy is crossing Canada with his Wanderlust tour, which features a different set each night, and covers anything from meeting the queen to pet cats to national anthems.

"I love the Canadian national anthem actually – it's like an afterthought," he quips. "Oh, Canada."

Danny Bhoy finishes his Wanderlust tour at the Centre Saturday and Sunday, ticketmaster.ca.
