A DNA test has determined that a Surrey man who bears a strong resemblance to Michael Dunahee is not the missing boy.
Victoria police announced the negative result on Monday, saying officers remain committed to the investigation and will continue to investigate Michael's disappearance.
The Surrey man posted on a fan forum on the Vancouver Canucks' website in July, saying he had been contacted by police who received tips that he bears a "remarkable resemblance" to Michael, who vanished from an elementary school playground in Victoria in 1991 at age four.
"They told me the michael dunahee story and explained that people have gave them tips or whatever, and that I resemble him, I match his age, etc. so they asked me to meet with them," the man wrote. "So I did last week, they got my blood and told me they didn't know exactly when results are coming but will contact me when they knew."
The man also posted a photo of himself, which did indeed bear a striking resemblance to an age-enhanced photo of Michael.
Officers have notified both the man and the Dunahee family.
