The RCMP Public Complaints Commission has launched an inquiry into the conduct of four Kamloops Mounties over allegations they watched two female prisoners have sex in a cell in August.

The four officers have been suspended with pay along with three civilian workers at the Kamloops detachment, and all seven are facing a criminal investigation after claims they watched the prisoners over a video monitor.

Complaints Commission Interim Chair Ian McPhail says his agency is launching the investigation in response to a public complaint and an independent civilian investigator will be appointed to the job.

The acting RCMP commander in Kamloops, Inspector Yves Lacassee, is welcoming the decision, saying the investigation will provide an independent review of what happened, which is in the public's best interest.
