When your teenage child wants to set up a Facebook page, most parents agree - but demand to be 'friended' so they can keep an eye on the results.

But what happens when the kid grows up? Do you really want to witness those photo-uploads from their Friday nights on the town? Never mind comment on their status updates?

Globe columnist Gary Mason has recently defriended his two university-aged sons - much to their relief.
