A Canadian is among three people found dead at a home in upstate New York.

Officers with the Geneseo Police Department went to a residence near the State University of New York at Geneseo early Sunday morning to find the bodies of two men and one woman.

The school issued a release identifying one of the victims as student athlete Matthew Hutchinson, 24, from North Vancouver.

Hutchinson played hockey in British Columbia for the Chilliwack Chiefs before starting school in the United States in 2012.

He was in his fourth year of university, studying geography and business, and volunteered as a firefighter.

The university identified the two other victims as Kelsey Annese, 21, from Webster, N.Y., and Colin Kingston, 24, of Geneseo.

Kingston had attended the school, while Annese was a senior studying education, Spanish and psychology, and played for the women's basketball team.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the trio's deaths are unclear.

Spokesman Jeffery Szczesniak said the deaths are being treated as suspicious but so far none are being labelled a homicide.

There were other people in the house when officers arrived, he said, but police had made no arrests and were not seeking any suspects as of Sunday afternoon.

"We are treating this as an isolated incident with no immediate threat to the community in any way shape or form," Szczesniak said.

He added there was no firearm involved but that officers had located a knife at the scene. Police have not released a cause of death.

More information is anticipated on Monday once the work of medical examiners is complete, he said.

The university issued a release calling the deaths a "terrible tragedy."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all involved," it said. "It is our hope that we can rally together to support each other during this time of mourning."

A ceremony is being planned for the three victims.
