Q and A: Garri Bardin

Garri Bardin was born in 1941 in the city of Orenburg, Russia. After graduating, he worked as an actor in the Gogol Theater and in feature films. In 1975 he started to work in the field of animation as a director. He directed 15 films in 15 years. In 1991, he and his team started their own studio - Stayer - creating four films that have won numerous prizes. His latest, The Ugly Duckling, screens at VIFF.

1. Pitch your film in 30 words or less.

The film is about intolerance of people who are not alike in language, the colour of skin, or in plumage. The story is based on the fairy tale of Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Duckling using the music of Tchaikovsky.

2. Describe the best or worst day of shooting.

The best day of shooting on the film was the last day.

3. What other festivals have you shown the film at?

Locarno, Saratov (Russia), Khemnits ( Germany).

4. What's the strangest question you have been asked about your film?

Why I did not shoot my film in 3D animation.

5. What movies are you hoping to catch at VIFF?

The new animation films.
