out there

History lessons rarely come with beer – but you will find both tales of yore and tasty brews on a guided walking tour at the former Olympic Athletes Village this weekend.

Organized by Heritage Vancouver and the City of Vancouver Archives, you can spend an afternoon wandering the shores of Southeast False Creek and learning about its industrial history, which includes everything from a major salt refinery – the large red Salt building remains to this day – to wartime shipbuilding operations that employed more than 3,000.

Then once you've sated your quest for knowledge, you can quench your thirst at the Legacy Liquor store, where they're offering tastes of various beers and salty snacks, as well as a photography exhibition about the village's transformation into, and out of, an Olympic hub.

The Industrial History of Southeast False Creek Walking Tour and Beer Tasting happens Saturday at 1 p.m. For more info, visit heritagevancouver.org.
