They're often too oaky, too hot (which in winespeak means their alcohol content is so high it leaves a burning sensation in the throat) or simply too complex. You'll find few reds as easy to drink as this high-quality Gamay Noir from Paul Garner and Julie Rennie's Pentâge Winery in Penticton, overlooking Skaha Lake. A beautiful cherry colour and flavours of fresh dark fruit and spice define this red, which has been fermented in oak and stainless steel, then blended. It's delightful to drink on its own or with burgers, hot dogs … or pick a sandwich: BLT, deli meat or tuna. Let it shine at a neighbourhood potluck, or chill for a picnic buffet at the beach. Avoid spicy foods and desserts (except for ripe berries) with Gamay. Available online and at private wine shops.
