Views from Stawamus Chief, overlooking Squamish, attract thousands of climbers and hikers every year.JONATHAN HAYWARD/The Canadian Press

A woman who died while hiking the Stawamus Chief in Squamish over the August long weekend has been identified by the B.C. Coroners Service.

Vancouver resident Gabriole VanKeith, 57, fell from somewhere near the summit of the Black Dyke trail on Sunday. It took rescue workers a half hour to locate her body after other hikers saw her falling mid-air.

Ms. VanKeith was hiking alone and did not have any identification on her, but the Coroners Service says it was able to identify her through information in her vehicle, which was found nearby.

The Chief is a popular tourist spot about 60 kilometres north of Vancouver, where hikers and rock-climbers scale a 700-metre high mountain.

Squamish RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said police haven't been able to determine exactly where the woman was when she fell or how she lost her footing.

"It still looks like a tragic accident," he said Friday. "But how she lost her balance and fell, we don't know."
