Lightning is being blamed for a wildfire that has forced 500 people to flee their homes in northern Saskatchewan.

Richard Kent, with Prince Albert Grand Council's emergency services, says the evacuees were taken from Hall Lake to La Ronge.

He says the fire not only threatens the community but also the highway that links it to La Ronge.

The fire is about half a square kilometre in size.

It started in a dry patch and was whipped up by the wind.

Hall Lake is 130 km northwest of Prince Albert.
