Police say a baby whom they found locked inside a Niagara Falls, Ont., hotel safe and freed by a maintenance worker this week have concluded the incident was an accident and there are no concerns for the child's safety.
Det. Const. Amanda Sanders of Niagara Region police told Global News that the parents contacted police from Markham, Ont., on Wednesday evening.
Sanders said it was determined after an interview with the parents that the child is safe and there was "no criminality involved."
She said children were playing in the Howard Johnson hotel room on Tuesday when they decided the safe was a good spot to hide but an older sibling didn't know how to open it after the baby was inside.
Sanders said the parents "immediately went out and tried to find some staff members to assist them to get the child out," adding that the child never lost consciousness in the safe and was constantly calling for her parents.
Police say the family, from Brooklyn, N.Y., had travelled from Niagara Falls to a Markham hotel north of Toronto when the parents contacted authorities.
"They've been co-operative ever since we've gotten a hold of them," said Sanders.
"We were concerned of the welfare of the baby. There's no criminality involved as it was an accident."
