Billboard tax savings estimated at $11.1-million Add to ...

A proposed Toronto billboard tax would raise $11.1-million when implemented by 2011, according to a report that goes to council's planning and growth management committee next week.

The proposal comes after a long campaign by activists who want the tax to pay for stronger enforcement of city billboard rules and to finance art in the public realm.

The revenue estimate, significantly higher than first imagined when the city won the right to impose such a tax, assumes there are 2,000 lawful signs of various size across the city.
