A body has been discovered in the rubble of a residential building destroyed by fire in Montreal's north end.

The fire erupted Monday morning, and by the afternoon, authorities confirmed that a person living in the three-storey building was missing.

A body was found after several hours of searching, but there was no immediate information on the victim's age or gender.

Police are investigating the cause of the blaze, which they earlier said might have been caused by some sort of explosion.

The fire in the city`s Villeray district sent up a cloud of smoke that was visible several kilometres away.
