Long-time Liberal MP and former Toronto mayor Art Eggleton announced Thursday that he will not be seeking re-election as York Centre MP.
The announcement comes following reports from CBC and the National Post that Prime Minister Paul Martin is expected to appoint Maple Leafs president and former hockey star Ken Dryden as a candidate in the riding in the upcoming federal election.
Mr. Eggleton, 60, was elected to Toronto City Council in 1969 and to the York Centre riding in 1993.
He served as Toronto budget chief from 1973 and 1980 and as Toronto mayor from 1980 to 1991. He has also served as federal minister for international trade and minister of national defence.
Ken Dryden was unavailable for comment. He was out of town on Thursday.
