The remaining residents have been evacuated from a First Nation community near the Northern Ontario town of Wawa that was isolated by flooding.

Police say 52 members of the Michipicoten First Nation are now safe and secure in Wawa after most were lifted out of the community by helicopters.

Twenty vulnerable residents – such as the elderly and those with medical conditions – were evacuated Saturday after the only road into the community was destroyed by flooding last Thursday.

Police say work to repair the road is continuing.

The Trans-Canada Highway at Wawa was partly reopened Sunday after it was damaged by heavy rains, which also washed out local roads and affected several houses and buildings around the town.

Police said a date for the complete reopening of the highway has not been set by the provincial Ministry of Transportation, but Wawa Mayor Linda Nowicki said Sunday that full access could be restored by the middle of the week.
