RCMP have charged a 15-year-old girl with attempted murder after a woman was attacked with an axe at a Halifax-area home.

Sgt. Scott MacRae says the 52-year-old woman was released from hospital Thursday after being attacked the night before on Prospect Bay Road.

Two girls, whom MacRae described as friends, were arrested in a vehicle in Halifax more than an hour later.

He says one of the girls is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, theft of a motor vehicle, and eight breaches of court orders.

MacRae says the girl and the woman both live in the same home, but he would not disclose their relationship.

The other girl, also 15, is charged with possessing stolen property worth more than $5,000 and 14 breaches of court orders.

Their names are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
