The mayor of this Southern Ontario city has become the first public official to be found guilty of violating the Municipal Elections Act. Larry Di Ianni pleaded guilty yesterday to six election violations, while 35 other charges were dropped.

He must also donate $4,500 to charity and write an essay for Municipal World Magazine so others can learn from his mistakes.

Mr. Di Ianni was accused of accepting illegal donations to his 2003 mayoral campaign, something he said was done in error.

Judge Anton Zuraw, who heard the case, approved the deal, saying Mr. Di Ianni's lack of intent and outstanding community service record entitled him to leniency. CP
