Crews are working to restore electricity to thousands of homes in Quebec after heavy rain and high winds brought down power lines overnight.

At one point Hydro-Quebec says more than 48,000 clients were without electricity, including 27,000 in the Montreal area.

The public utility says about 8,000 were without power as of noon Sunday.

The rain also washed out portions of a key highway connecting the province's Charlevoix and Saguenay regions.

Police say a car got stuck in a metre-and-a-half deep crevice in the road but say no one was injured in the accident.

Heavy flooding around some parts of Quebec City has also been reported.
