A Hong Kong billionaire has given a record international donation to the University of California at Berkeley, a Chinese news agency reports.

The $40-million donation from Li Ka Shing through his charitable foundation will be used to establish a research centre focusing on new scientific fields including stem-cell biology and brain imaging, the Xinhua news agency reports.

Mr. Li's donation will jump-start planning on a new $160-million (U.S.) scientific research centre slated for construction in 2007. It is the largest international gift in the university's history.
