Terry Fox strides out from Sault Ste. Marie. On April 12, 1980, the slight 21-year-old from British Columbia began the Marathon of Hope in St. John's by dipping his artificial leg into the Atlantic. Running 26 miles a day, he gained more and more public support and media attention.
