A British Airways Airbus A380 en route to London from San Francisco made an emergency landing at Vancouver International Airport after crew members became sick, the airline said on Tuesday.

Earlier reports said about 25 people aboard the flight were taken to local Vancouver area hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation, but the airline said the plane was diverted to Vancouver "after members of the cabin crew became unwell."

The crew members were checked at the local hospitals "as a precaution before being discharged," British Airways said in an e-mail message.

"Our ground team at Vancouver has arranged hotel accommodation for the customers and will book them on alternative flights as soon as possible."

The airline did not say how many passengers were aboard the plane, which can carry more than 400.

A total of 20 crew members were treated at Richmond Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital, said Laura Kohli, a spokeswoman for Vancouver Coastal Health. Another five crew members were treated at Delta Hospital.
