The lawyer for a man accused of killing his wife, stepdaughter, girlfriend and business partner says his client will plead not guilty.

Charles Kembo appeared in Provincial Court yesterday in Richmond. Outside court, Mr. Kembo's lawyer, Brad Tak, said his client will plead not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.

There's a publication ban on evidence presented at the hearing.

Mr. Kembo was a government-sponsored refugee from Malawi who arrived in Canada in 1989.

He is charged in the deaths of his wife, Margaret Kembo, in January of 2003; his long-time friend and business partner, Arden Samuel, in November of 2003; his girlfriend, Sui Ma, in November of 2004; and his stepdaughter, Rita Yeung, in July of 2005.

The case returns to court on Feb. 23. CP
