Party stalwarts likely taking on prominent roles in an NDP Official Opposition
Thomas Mulcair, whose election in a Montreal riding was the start of the NDP breakthrough in Quebec, could have a major critic?s post. A former provincial Liberal cabinet minister, he can be prickly and is widely believed to have leadership ambitions. But his central role in improving NDP fortunes within Quebec has earned him a reward.
Libby Davies, who has held her seat for 14 years and been an outspoken defender of Vancouver's Downtown East Side ? including the controversial Insite safe injection site ? would be an obvious choice.
Joe Comartin, the low-key lawyer from Windsor, Ont., who has been a party stalwart and is called upon to defend NDP justice policy, would be a key player.
Jack Harris, another lawyer who rejected the compromise reached by the other parties to settle the controversy over the handling of Afghan detainee documents, would likely get a seat in the front row.
