Prime Minister Stephen Harper has appointed Ontario MP Guy Lauzon as chairman of the Conservative caucus.

Mr. Lauzon replaces Rahim Jaffer, who was narrowly defeated in his Edmonton riding by New Democrat Linda Duncan.

Mr. Harper said Mr. Lauzon, 63, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

He said the former public servant and businessman is fluently bilingual and well-respected among his colleagues.

Mr. Lauzon has served as parliamentary secretary to the Agriculture minister.

In his new role, he will preside over weekly meetings involving Tory MPs and senators.
