Montreal Gazette to halt Sunday publication Add to ...

The Montreal Gazette will cease publishing on Sundays starting this summer, the paper's publisher has announced.

The final Sunday edition of the paper will roll off the presses in August, publisher and editor Alan Allnutt told employees in a memo that was later posted online.

Mr. Allnutt said the paper's Sunday edition "has struggled to find significant advertising support to cover the costs of printing and distribution."

The Gazette first started publishing a Sunday paper 22 years ago in response to competition that was publishing seven days a week. Montreal's La Presse eliminated its Sunday edition last year. Several papers in the United States and Canada have been rolling back the frequency of print editions.

Mr. Allnutt promised the paper would continue to cover news and sports on the weekend through its websites. He also said the Saturday section would be expanded to include popular Sunday features, starting August 7.
