Naturalists are criticizing the Alberta government for killing wolves in a last-ditch attempt to save endangered woodland caribou.

A provincial report warns that the Little Smoky herd north of Hinton is one of three distinct caribou populations in Alberta considered at immediate risk of disappearing.

The herd shrank by two-thirds between 1988 and 2000 and the government says only about 100 animals remain.

Environmentalists say they're not suggesting the wolf cull stop, but they say the government should stop new industrial development in the area as well. CP
