The president and CEO of NB Power says progress has been made to restore power for thousands of its customers a week after an ice storm cut off electricity, but a winter storm forecast for Sunday could hamper efforts.

Gaetan Thomas says 196 line and tree trimming crews are working today to restore power for 12,000 customers in southwestern regions of New Brunswick.

Thomas says it's hoped most customers will be reconnected by the end of Tuesday, but that could change depending on how a storm overnight Sunday impacts ice-laden trees.

He says 14 more crews are en route from Quebec and Prince Edward Island to help out.

Thomas says customers who have been without power the longest are the priority.

He says the Crown-owned utility has been calling customers directly and reaching out to people in warming centres with information on the restoration efforts.
