Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter is condemning a cross-burning incident in the province, saying there's no room for intolerance or racism.

Mr. Dexter says he was deeply saddened by the event.

He says when such things happen, good people come together around those who have been injured to support them.

RCMP say a cross was set alight at the home of an interracial couple in Newport.

Two brothers who police say are known to the couple have been charged with public incitement of hatred, mischief and uttering threats.

Shayne Howe, who is black, and Michelle Lyon, who is white, say they awoke early Sunday to find a cross burning on the front lawn of their home.
