A 12-year-old boy was killed Monday evening after being struck by a freight train while trying to ride his bike across some tracks in Woodstock, Ont.

Witnesses said the child, identified as Jake Sterling, had been waiting with another boy at a railway crossing for a westbound train to pass. After the train had passed through the crossing, the two boys, ignoring the flashing emergency lights, went by the still-lowered safety arm. The first boy made it through the crossing, but the eastbound train struck the trailing boy.
