Ottawa organ donation crusader recuperating after double lung transplant Add to ...

Lung transplant surgery has successfully been carried out on an Ottawa woman whose campaign for organ donation caught the attention of celebrity crooner Justin Bieber.

Hélène Campbell's family announced the surgery overnight on a website chronicling the 20-year-old's battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

They later issued a statement Friday afternoon saying Ms. Campbell had emerged from her double lung transplant and was recuperating at Toronto General Hospital.

Ms. Campbell was diagnosed with her condition last September and was consequently placed on a transplant list.

Her campaign to raise awareness about organ donation got a major boost from Mr. Bieber after the Canadian pop star tweeted about it in January.

It hit another high a month later when Ms. Campbell appeared by Skype on the American talk show Ellen.

Many of Ms. Campbell's nearly 10,000 Twitter followers sent her messages of support today.

Her parents have tweeted their thanks for the encouraging words and also expressed their gratitude to the donor's family and the hospital staff.
