Nova Scotia's police watchdog agency says an RCMP officer based in Halifax has been charged with sexual assault.

The Serious Incident Response Team issued a statement saying it was called in to investigate allegations in late March after a three-day RCMP meeting at White Point Beach Lodge near Liverpool, N.S.

At the time, the independent agency says it received a complaint about an alleged assault by the male officer against a female member of the RCMP on March 24.

As well, the agency says it learned about another allegation of sexual assault involving the inappropriate sexual touching of a female RCMP civilian employee on March 25.

The agency says one charge of sexual assault was laid today against Sgt. Kenneth James Taker of Dartmouth in relation to the incident on March 25.

However, the agency did not disclose any details about the allegations.

The 47-year-old accused is to appear in Liverpool provincial court July 7.
