The mayor of Belleville, Ont., says it's "going to be some rough days ahead" for the city and region in the wake of the arrest of an air force colonel.
Col. Russell Williams has been arrested and charged in the deaths of two women and in the sexual assaults of two others.
Col. Williams is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville, and Marie France Comeau, a 38-year-old air force corporal.
An autopsy will be performed today on the body of Lloyd in Toronto.
Mayor Neil Ellis says news of Col. Williams' arrest was definitely a "shock to the community" and that the next few days "are going to be tough."
He told the CBC everyone will have to come together and "get through this."
Provincial police Sgt. Kristine Rae, meanwhile, said the investigation is still in its preliminary stages and "there are many avenues" to examine.
Sgt. Rae says a decision on additional charges against Williams "is still pending" and is not being ruled out.
"As the investigation proceeds, whatever happens to develop, we will follow the evidence and if further charges are required, then they will be laid."
Sgt. Williams, a 46-year-old career member of the Canadian Forces, was appointed as the base commander of CFB Trenton last July.
