Rwandan prosecutors have sent extradition requests to the Canadian government for five accused genocide masterminds believed to be hiding in Canada, The Canadian Press has learned.

The men are on Interpol and Rwandan lists of those most-wanted for the massacre of up to a million Rwandans in 1994 and they include several former Rwandan politicians and Leon Mugesera, an academic living in Quebec City.

"We've got five people that we think are confirmed to be in Canada," said Jean Bosco Mutangana, spokesman for the Rwandan prosecution office and for a special unit tracking genocide suspects.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

Along with Mr. Mugesera, those believed to be in Canada are former politicians Pierre Celestin Halindintwali, Evariste Bicamumpaka and Gaspard Ruhumuliza. The fifth man is Vincent Ndamage.

Mr. Mugesera has denied the accusations against him.
