High winds, heavy rain and pounding surf causing coastal flooding continues to be a concern in large areas of Atlantic Canada.

Environment Canada says the weather conditions are expected to persist through Wednesday and into Thursday in parts of all four Atlantic provinces.

Flooding due to rain and a powerful coastal storm surge has hit areas of eastern New Brunswick and an official with the province's Emergency Management Office says up to 100 people or more have left their homes.

Flooding has also been a problem in Cape Breton, particularly in and around the Sydney area, where police report as many as seven roads were closed because they were impassable.

Power crews continue to attempt to restore electricity and numbers were down to less than 1,300 customer outages earlier today in Cape Breton and eastern Nova Scotia and about 2,100 customers in eastern New Brunswick.

Meanwhile, the weather continues to tie up the ferry service between Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia and crossing restrictions are still in place on the Confederation Bridge between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
