For more than four decades, the federalist-sovereigntist debate has dominated Quebec politics, with the Liberals and the Parti Québécois exchanging places in government and opposition, while other political forces try to find a "third way." The "no" side has won two referendums, a new Constitution was enacted without the approval of the government of Quebec, then two attempts to change the Constitution to bring Quebec formally into the fold were defeated. A Parti Québécois victory in the Sept. 4 provincial election could lead to a third referendum. This timeline explores the elections and referendums throughout the past four decades.
