Prime Minister Harper is pledging Canada's continued support to Ukraine, which has been battling Russian-backed rebels in the eastern part of that country for the past 15 months.

Harper made the commitment yesterday in a phone call with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The Prime Minister's Office says Poroshenko thanked Canada for the support it has given over the past few months, and for Canada's role in upcoming training exercises.

Poroshenko told Harper the recent capture of two Russian soldiers in eastern Ukraine is solid evidence of Moscow's direct involvement in the region's crisis.

Canada is among a number of western countries that have imposed economic and diplomatic sanctions against Russia.

Canada has also provided non-lethal military equipment to the Ukrainian government, and has given humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian civilians.
