Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau says will he will ditch the proposed toll system for Montreal's Champlain Bridge if he is elected prime minister.

The Liberals say they will move forward with the planned construction of the bridge but they do not believe the tolling system is appropriate.

Trudeau says the Champlain Bridge is an essential artery to and from Montreal and it is an vital corridor for the national economy.

The Liberal leader is set to meet with Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre.

Coderre was a longtime member of the federal Grit fold before he became mayor.

Trudeau has spent much of the week in Quebec, where he is trying to make inroads in a province where the party only claimed seven seats in the last election.

Trudeau will move on to Toronto later today.
