Defence Minister Peter MacKay and his former fiance, Jana Juginovic.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay and his fiancée, CTV executive Jana Juginovic, are splitting up.

The couple, who were engaged in October, recently decided to end their five-year relationship. Sources say the engagement was called off after much discussion.

Their breakup is amicable and the two remain friends.

Ms. Juginovic, 36, is a very private person; she has always been extremely respectful of her relationship with the high-profile politician.

She just recently finished a year at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., after winning the prestigious Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellow.

Ms. Juginovic has returned to CTV in Toronto. She would not comment.

Mr. MacKay, 44, has been a senior member of the Conservative cabinet since Stephen Harper formed a government in 2006. The Nova Scotia MP and former leader of the Progressive Conservative Party is credited with helping to merge the PC Party and the Canadian Alliance, which led to Mr. Harper becoming Prime Minister.

He has had his ups and downs in government. Once, he referred to his former girlfriend, Belinda Stronach, as a "dog."

He attracts a lot of attention in the media; never married, he has often been portrayed as a high flyer.

But as Defence Minister, he has been a huge supporter of the troops and the operation in Afghanistan.
